The contentious Telangana issue appears to have come back to square one with yet another confusing statement of Union Home Minister P Chidambaram.
Chidambaam’s comment that the formation of Telangana state is not in the hands of the Centre, but it depends on the consensus to be achieved in the State, has led to a commotion in the political circles. Telangana Telugu Desam Party leades wondered why Chidambaram had appointed Justice Srikrishna Committee to deal with the issue, if it is not in the hands of the Centre. Does he not know that there is no consensus on the Telangana formation in the state as is evident from the reports being submitted to the Srikrishna Committee, they asked.
Ironically, Justice Srikrishna also threw up his hands on the Telangana issue, stating that the committee is confined only to consultation process, but the final decision would have to be taken by the Centre. A bill has to be introduced by the Centre in Parliament, he reminded.
While Praja Rajyam Party president Chiranjeevi said Chidambaram statement indicated that the state would remain united, CPI (M) state secretary B V Raghavulu blamed it on the Congress for making the issue more and more complicated.
